Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy regrets lobster dinner with alleged mafia boss
WHEN he went to the Lobster Cave for a slap-up meal, Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy had no idea it would cause this much fuss.
VICTORIAN Opposition Leader Matthew Guy says if he had his time again he would not meet with an alleged mafia boss for a lobster dinner.
Mr Guy met with alleged mafia identity Tony Madafferi and other Liberal party figures at the Lobster Cave in Beaumaris in May.
He said he spoke to fruit and vegetable seller Mr Madafferi as part of a group discussion on Melbourne markets.
“They didn’t want anything, they just wanted to talk to me about the operation,” Mr Guy told reporters on Tuesday.
When askd if he should have left after he realised Mr Madafferri was there, Mr Guy said: “once you’re there you’re there”.
Mr Guy said it wasn’t a secret dinner and he was invited by long time Liberal party donor Frank Lamattina — but if he had his time again he wouldn’t go.
“Frank said to me he would bring his cousins ... the Lamattina family is big,” he said.
“I went there, I met someone associated with the party for 50 years.” Deputy Premier James Merlino said Mr Guy needed to explain himself.
“What dirty deals has he done with organised crime figures in Victoria? It’s not Matthew Guy, it’s Mafia Guy,” Deputy Premier James Merlino told 3AW on Tuesday.
