Publicly Barack Obama prescribed to the convention that presidents don’t criticise one another.

But behind closed doors he reportedly unleashed about his successor Donald Trump.

A new book claims Obama called Trump a “madman”, a “racist, sexist pig”, “that f**king lunatic” and a “corrupt motherf**ker”.

Edward-Isaac Dovere, a staff writer at The Atlantic, details in Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats’ Campaigns to Defeat Donald Trump how Obama called Trump a “madman”.

“More often: ‘I didn’t think it would be this bad’,” he writes of Obama’s reported remarks.

“Sometimes: ‘I didn’t think we’d have a racist, sexist pig.’ Depending on the outrage of the day … a passing ‘that fucking lunatic’ with a shake of his head.”

Dovere claims Obama’s strongest remark was related to reports that Trump was speaking to foreign leaders such as Vladimir Putin amid the investigation of Russian election interference and links between Trump and Moscow, without any aides on the call, according to The Guardian which has received a copy of the book out next week.

“‘That corrupt motherf**ker,’ he remarked,” the book claims.

Various media outlets have published excerpts of the book, including a passage in which the now first lady, Jill Biden, is quoted as saying now Vice-President Kamala Harris should “go f**k herself” after she went after Joe Biden in one of the debates.

It happened way back in mid-2019, during the Democratic primaries, when Mr Biden and Ms Harris were both high profile candidates for their party’s presidential nomination.

Politico published an excerpt focused on the confrontation between Mr Biden and Ms Harris and its aftermath.

A few minutes after their exchange, Dovere says, the debate was paused for an ad break. Mr Biden leaned over to Pete Buttigieg, another candidate who is now serving in the President’s cabinet as Secretary of Transportation.

“Well, that was some f***ing bulls***,” Mr Biden said.

“They barely knew each other, but Biden was looking for someone to share the moment with,” Dovere notes.

He goes on to describe the reaction of Mr Biden’s worried staff, who felt his campaign was “teetering” and he was “coming off as old, angry and spiteful”.

Jill Biden, meanwhile, was furious.

Trump and his family are facing the increasing likelihood of criminal charges after New York state’s prosecutor said it was working with Manhattan investigators in its probe into the former president’s business dealings.

The office of New York state Attorney-General Letitia James announced late Tuesday it was investigating the Trump Organisation in a “criminal capacity”.

Previously, it had said its probe into possible tax, insurance and bank fraud was through civil proceedings, which do not carry the threat of an indictment or imprisonment.

Trump denies wrongdoing and released a statement Wednesday describing the investigation and the parallel criminal probe by Manhattan’s district attorney as “a continuation of the greatest political witch hunt in the history of the United States.” The prosecutors in both Manhattan and New York state are Democrats.

“We have informed the Trump Organisation that our investigation into the organisation is no longer purely civil in nature,” said a spokesman for James.
