Prime Minister Anthony Albanese opens up on very private love life with Jodie Haydon

Their relationship is notoriously private – but now, PM Anthony Albanese has shed new light on his life with “First Lady” Jodie Haydon.

'I'm away a lot': Strong 'friendship' binds Albanese and Jodie

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese opened up about his notoriously private relationship with partner Jodie Haydon in a new interview.

Speaking with Sky News host Erin Molan, Mr Albanese credited the pair’s strong “friendship” to the success of the relationship, especially given his election win in May this year means he’s now working long hours and is frequently away from home due to state matters.

“It’s still a relatively new relationship because of the time we inevitably spend apart,” Mr Albanese said.

“My life is one where I’m not in a new relationship spending that intense time that you would normally spend, I’m away a lot in parliament or with work.”

Mr Albanese, who became the nation’s 31st Prime Minister after defeating Scott Morrison in the polls this year, added that having a partner to share your time with was an “important part of life”.

The couple’s two-year relationship was thrust into the spotlight ahead of the election campaign earlier this year, with the pair featuring in a February Women’s Weekly piece which caught the nation’s attention.

Ms Haydon, 43, also appeared alongside Mr Albanese at a string of events on the campaign trail, and was front and centre on election night when the Labor leader claimed victory.

In an interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly earlier this year, Mr Albanese opened up about being left heartbroken when his ex-wife, former Deputy Premier of NSW Carmel Tebbutt, with whom he shares a 21-year-old son, Nathan, abruptly ended their 30-year relationship at the start of 2019.

He told the magazine he was left “emotionally bruised” by the ordeal, but that he had found happiness again after meeting Ms Haydon at an event in Melbourne in 2020.

He said he had asked if there were any South Sydney fans in the audience, to which “Jodie yelled out, ‘Up the Rabbitohs’”.

After he introduced himself, Mr Albanese found out she also lived a couple of suburbs away in his electorate of Marrickville.

Ms Haydon, a strategic partnership manager for an industry super fund, told The Australian Women’s Weekly she wasn’t looking for a relationship at the time she met the Labor leader.

“I’d reached a point in my life where I was enjoying being single,” she said.

The pair were first spotted together kissing at an up-market Sydney restaurant in June 2020.

Ms Haydon told the magazine she didn’t realise how strong her feelings for Mr Albanese were until he was involved in a life-threatening car crash.

In January 2022 Mr Albanese was driving home to Marrickville when he a 17-year-old Range Rover driver veered onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into the Labor leader.

“I saw the mess of a car before I saw him and thought, ‘He couldn’t survive this,’” Ms Haydon said.

“It was very scary, and in that moment, you realise just how much you love this person, the fear of losing them.”
