Pauline Hanson got a ‘Halaal’ jar of vegemite for Christmas

“IT’S funny because it’s true.” Pauline Hanson has kept her sense of humour this silly season, after someone sent her a cheeky Christmas gift.

SHE doesn’t like it, but Pauline Hanson is willing to have a giggle about the surprise Christmas gift she received in the post.

The One Nation leader and vocal opponent of halal certification received a personalised jar of Vegemite bearing a custom label that reads “Halaal”.

Tweeting an image of her frowning self holding up the jar, Ms Hanson included the hashtag #funnybecauseitstrue, referencing the fact that Vegemite — along with many food products on our supermarket shelves — is halal certified, meaning that it is permissible for consumption under Islamic law and has been confirmed as such by an Islamic certification body.

Labor Senator Sam Dastyari, who famously invited Ms Hanson to join him for a halal snackpack at a western Sydney kebab shop on live television on election night, also received a customised jar of the iconic Aussie spread.

“It’s not happening, not interested in halal, thank you,” she said at the time. “I’m not interested in it. I don’t believe in halal certification.”

Mr Dastyari took the opportunity to extend the olive leaf, tweeting: “I note we both got one of these? Should I come up to Brisbane before New Year’s for a toast? A serious offer ...”

Ms Hanson is probably too busy planning how she will consolidate her power from 2017 onwards, to meet with the backbencher who fell from grace in September amid a Chinese donations scandal.

She confirmed to news.com.au this week that One Nation will seek to expand its influence by running candidates in state elections.

The party’s elected Senators shrunk by a quarter earlier this week when Rod Culleton quit, making Ms Hanson’s Christmas cards look awkwardly outdated.

“There is an enormous sense of pride in what the party has been able to achieve in the past year,” the message inside the card read. “We would say that we’re just getting started.”

Meanwhile Dick Smith, who controversially backed Pauline Hanson’s stance on immigration earlier this month, received a Vegemite jar with the label “Not Aussie”.
