The former couple – who have a son, X Æ A-Xii, or X, born in 2020, and daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, who goes by Y and was born via surrogate – also share Techno Mechanicus, who goes by the nickname Tau. The existence of Tau has been kept private until now; their age has not been made public.

The detail was revealed in a New York Times review of journalist Walter Isaacson’s book on Musk, titled Elon Musk – for which he was given unprecedented access to the billionaire over the last two years.

Accounting for Tau, Musk now has ten known biological children with three different women.

He and Grimes, born Claire Boucher, announced their relationship in May 2018 – and while they have since split, the singer has previously said their relationship is “fluid”.

“I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid,” she told Vanity Fair last March, in the same profile that inadvertently revealed their daughter’s existence after the infant was heard crying upstairs during the interview.

“We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time … We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.

“This is the best it’s ever been. We just need to be free.”

After the story went live, Grimes clarified on social media that the pair had once again split.

“Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article haha, but he’s my best friend and the love of my life, and my life and art are forever dedicated to The Mission now.”

Relations between the two have since soured, however; in a now-deleted post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the 35-year-old wrote that Musk was “ripping” their family apart by not allowing her to see their eldest child.

Responding to photos of Musk and the mother of his recently born twins, Shivon Zilis, she wrote, per the Los Angeles Times: “Tell Shivon to unblock me and tell Elon to let me see my son or plz respond to my lawyer.”

“I have never even been allowed to see a photo of these children until this moment,” Grimes continued, “despite the situation utterly ripping my family apart.”

When the Times reached out to Musk for comment, it received an automated response that read, “Busy now, please check back later.”
