How Nick Xenophon blew his first — and only — date with Jacqui Lambie

THE outspoken former senator joked Senator Nick Xenophon “may have got to first base” if he wasn’t such a cheapskate.

I would've brought instability to Tasmania: Lambie

FORMER Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie has revealed she once went on a date with Nick Xenophon — to a fast food joint.

The outspoken former politician, who is hoping to make a comeback at the next federal election, told Brisbane’s Hit 105’s Stav, Abby and Matt Mr Xenophon had blown his chances for a follow up date by being a “cheapskate”.

“I did try with Nick Xenophon once but he took me on a cheap date — cheapskate,” she said.

“He took me to Kentucky Fried Chicken so that was it.”

She joked she might have given him a second chance if he had chosen a fancier eatery.

“I may have changed my mind. He may have got to first base, who knows,” she said.

But today, Mr Xenophon hit back at Ms Lambie’s “cheapskate” sledge, telling the Hit Network’s Amos, Cat & Angus “it wasn’t a date”.

“Jacqui’s a great mate of mine ... It wasn’t a date,” he said.

The South Australian senator also defended his choice of eatery.

“The only place that was open was KFC,” he said.

“I lashed out, I think I got 12 nuggets for her.”

Ms Lambie, 47, who founded the Jacqui Lambie Network (JLN), was found to hold British dual citizenship in November 2017 and she announced her resignation later that month.

The mother of two told the station she was “out [of parliament] at the wrong time”, and said recent political sex scandals such as the one involving Barnaby Joyce and his now pregnant former staffer Vikki Campion had turned it into “50 shades of parly”.

She said Mr Joyce should step down from politics altogether as a result of the affair, but insisted she wasn’t interested in “rumours” about people’s personal lives.

“If they want to go out there and go bonking then be my guest I’m happy for you — at least somebody is getting some,” she said.

Ms Lambie was originally elected as a member of the Palmer United Party (PUP), and she made a name for herself by fighting for issues including foreign affairs, veterans’ affairs and youth unemployment as well as being a vocal critic of Islam an sharia law.

She resigned from the PUP in November 2014, and in May 2015, the Jacqui Lambie Network was registered with the Australian Electoral Commission, with Ms Lambie as its leader.

Ms Lambie is now promoting her new autobiography, Rebel With a Cause.
