Elon Musk has called for Americans to vote for Republican candidates in the midterms.

On the eve of the 2022 United States elections, in which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats will be contested, Mr Musk called for voters to back the Republican Party.

“To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic,” the new owner of Twitter wrote on his social media account.

“Hardcore Democrats or Republicans never vote for the other side, so independent voters are the ones who actually decide who’s in charge!” he added.

The Democrats currently control the House with 220 members to 212 Republicans.

The GOP has a slim majority in the Senate — 50-48. However, two independents support the Democrats meaning control is split 50-50 and Vice President Kamala Harris can vote to break a tie.

Polling by FiveThirtyEight predicts that the Republicans have a strong chance of holding between 48 and 54 Senate seats and between 214 and 246 House seats.

In May this year Mr Musk revealed he had switched his allegiance to the Republican Party after previously voting for the Democrats.

He called the Democrats the party of “division and hate”.

“In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party,” he wrote on Twitter.

“But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican.

“Now, watch their dirty tricks campaign again against me unfold …”

Mr Musk’s latest foray into politics angered Democrats.

Activist Nina Turner responded by writing, “It’s easy for Elon Musk to say ‘vote Republican’ because he doesn’t have to worry about Social Security, Medicare, the minimum wage being cut, or reproductive rights.”

Others called out the billionaire for his partisan tweet after previously declaring Twitter would be politically neutral.

“Elon Musk, April 27: For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral. Elon Musk, November 7: I recommend voting for a Republican Congress,” author James Surowiecki wrote.

‘Uphill battle’

Although President Joe Biden is not on the ballot, his approval rating is a dismal 40 per cent and that’s expected to weigh heavily on the Democrats.

More than 40 million ballots have been cast through early voting options, meaning the outcome was already taking shape before polls open nationwide Tuesday, Agence France-Presse reports.

Mr Biden acknowledged that Democrats face an uphill battle to retain control of Congress, telling supporters that “if we’re able to hold on, we’re going to be in an incredible shape.”

“I know that sounds like a very high expectation,” he admitted, adding that “we’re up against some of the darkest forces we’ve ever seen in our history.”

Mr Biden, who has framed his closing argument as a warning that American democracy is on the line, was set to close out days of campaigning for Democratic candidates at a rally Monday evening near Baltimore.
