Donald Trump, Piers Morgan interview: Viewers ‘distracted’ by POTUS’ glass of water

WHO knew a glass of water could create a fuss? This was the distracting moment of Piers Morgan’s chat with Donald Trump.

IT WAS an interview that was always going to generate plenty of interest, but in the end it was something very minor from Piers Morgan’s chat with US President Donald Trump that got everyone talking.

The interview was filmed last week during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and aired on UK TV today.

And while it did indeed create a lot of Twitter attention for various reasons, it was Mr Trump’s glass of water which got some people a little distracted.

Paper covers for glasses are common in some hotels to ensure the cleanliness of glassware.

It also shows guests their drink has been protected from any dirt or dust getting in.

The water wasn’t the only thing which viewers noticed, with Morgan coming under fire from some viewers who said he was too soft on the President.

Morgan didn’t take it lightly, responding to critics, including UK comedian Jack Whitehall on Twitter.

It isn’t the first time Morgan has interviewed Mr Trump, someone who he has described as a friend after the pair hit it off during the 2008 series of Celebrity Apprentice.

However Morgan has also been critical of the President in the past, taking him to task in November after he shared a video from far-right party Britain First on his Twitter page.

He also criticised him for his tweet that “no politician in history has been treated worse or more unfairly,” over the Russia probe.

Here are some other key moments from the interview:

TRUMP IS POPULAR

The US President described his 2016 win as convincing.

“I would love to do a popular vote,” he said, despite the fact rival Hillary Clinton actually won it.

He also slammed claims he didn’t actually want to win the election as “fake news” from “that fake book” referring to Michael Wolff’s Fire & Fury look at the White House.

HE’S SORRY... SORT OF

Morgan quizzed the President about the infamous Britain First retweet.

Mr Trump caused uproar when he retweeted a number of videos originally posted by Jayda Fransen — the deputy leader of Britain First, in November last year.

“You were effectively endorsing this bunch of racists,” Morgan said.

Mr Trump admitted he retweeted them out of ignorance.

“Here’s what’s fair, if you’re telling me they’re horrible people, horrible racist people, I would certainly apologise if you would like me to do that. I know nothing about them. I don’t want to be involved with [these] people, but you’re telling me about these people because I know nothing about these people.”

‘NOT A FEMINIST’

Morgan asked the President as the father of two daughters and with strong women around him if he identifies as a feminist.

“No, I wouldn’t say I’m a feminist,” Mr Trump said. “I mean, I think that would be, maybe, going too far. I’m for women, I’m for men, I’m for everyone. I think people have to go out, they have to go out and really do it, and they have to win. And women are doing great, and I’m happy about that.”

GUNS ARE ESSENTIAL

Morgan, an outspoken critic on gun control, questioned the President over his stance, highlighting the higher numbers of people killed by the weapons than terrorists.

Mr Trump maintains his stance saying the weapons are vital.

“We do have gun control laws,” Mr Trump said. “This sick (referring to Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock) guy was a sicko, he could have had 55 bombs or 55 something else.

“We need the second amendment for security.”

HE’S TOUGH

Mr Trump said he had a lot of respect for British PM Theresa May but said he would have negotiated Brexit very differently.

The President said he would have taken a “tougher stand” in talks and that the EU was “not cracked up to what it’s supposed to be.”

“Would it be the way I negotiate? No,” he said. “I wouldn’t negotiate it the way it’s being negotiated.”

“I would have had a different attitude. I would have said the European Union is not cracked up to what it’s supposed to be. I would have taken a tougher stand in getting out.”

RESPECTS LEADERS AND THEIR WIVES

Morgan points out the red carpet was rolled out for the President during his visit to France and he asks him what he thinks of the French leader Emmanuel Macron?

Mr Trump said he thinks he’s a great guy and also regards his wife highly.

“His wife is fantastic,” he said.

On the other hand Mr Trump admitted he had no clue who UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was.
