Boris Johnson’s girlfriend Carrie Symonds steals the spotlight on his first day in office

It was Boris’ big day but all eyes were on his girlfriend as she made a rare appearance alongside staff at Downing Street to watch his big day.

As a crowd gathered to watch Boris Johnson walk into 10 Downing Street as the new Prime Minister, more than a few eyes were trained on his girlfriend.

Carrie Symonds watched on from the sidelines as her partner entered the famous residence alone.

Most new prime ministers usually pose for photos with their partners outside the house, but Johnson left his other half standing outside with his staff.

It has been suggested that not having the 31-year-old stand next to the new PM was a deliberate move so she wouldn’t “overshadow” his moment, British media reported.

Symonds previously worked as a communications director for Johnson’s Conservative Party.

The couple have been under intense media scrutiny since they started dating last year, but have always been very private about their relationship.

The 55-year-old prime minister is still in the process of divorcing his wife, Marina Wheeler, who he had four children with and was married to for 25 years.

Nicholas Allen, lecturer in politics at London’s Royal Holloway University, suggested it would have been “indiscreet” for Johnson to enter the residence with his girlfriend.

“It is difficult for him to walk into Downing Street with another woman when you are still technically married to someone else. That would be considered indiscreet,” Mr Allen told Express.

“Boris’s colourful personal life makes the traditional photo call problematic.”

Symonds decision not to pose next to her partner as he entered Number 10 has sparked speculation about when or if she will move into the Downing Street home.

Johnson has repeatedly refused to answer questions about whether the nation’s “first girlfriend” will move in.

“I just don’t talk about people I love,’ he said last week.

“They can’t speak for themselves and you drag them into subjects and areas of controversy and discussion that they don’t, in my view, deserve or want.”

UK media reports Ms Symonds will live in the four-bedroom flat above number 11 Downing Street with Mr Johnson, while Chancellor Sajid Javid will live in a smaller flat above number 10.

If she does, they will become the first unmarried couple to ever live there together.

Symonds possible living arrangements wasn’t the only thing that had people talking, with her choice of outfit earning her plenty of praise.

She wore a pink, floral midi dress from Ghost, which retails for £120 ($A215).

The dress “features a high neckline with back fastening and voluminous sleeves and seam detailing at the bodice for definition,” according to the shop’s website.

People loved the outfit so much that it completely sold out online shortly after her appearance.

Symonds style was praised on social media for her style.

“Reward provided for anyone who can tell me where Carrie Symonds’ dress is from,” one user tweeted.

Even Piers Morgan weighed in on her outfit choice, tweeting: “Speaking in my capacity as Britain’s fashion expert, I loved @carriesymonds’ dress.”

RELATIONSHIP UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

Johnson and Symonds have reportedly been living together after the new prime minster confirmed he split from his wife last year.

Their usually private relationship was put under intense scrutiny last month when police were called to their home after a neighbour reportedly heard them having a fight.

Ms Symonds was recorded screaming at Mr Johnson to get off her and “get out” and sounds of things been smashed could be heard in the background, according to The Guardian.

Police arrived at the home have receiving a call from the neighbour but left shortly after.

After news broke of the alleged row, Johnson was dogged by questions about what happened.

Interest was amped up even more when a picture of the couple in a garden was released the next day, sparking suggestions it had been strategically leaked to show a united front.

Despite appearing in newspapers after news of the fight broke, there were no details about when, where or by whom the picture was taken.

During a radio interview with Leading Britain’s Conversation (LBC), presenter Nick Ferrari repeatedly pressed Johnson about the photo.

He refused half a dozen times throughout the interview to comment on the picture.

Many people were convinced the photo was taken a while ago, claiming he was sporting much longer hair in the picture than he had at the time.

Mr Ferrari brought up this point about his seemingly different haircut, but the UK politician branded the whole line of questioning as “beyond satire”.
