Footage captures household bin being ‘eaten’ by garbage truck
A Brisbane household was convinced someone stole their rubbish bin. But when they looked at security footage, it revealed the real “thief”.
Security footage has amazed Reddit users after it showed a Brisbane household’s wheelie bin being “eaten” by a council garbage truck.
The Brisbane Reddit user who shared the video taken by their Nest doorbell camera said they were initially perplexed at not being able to find their bin.
“So I went out to take the trash out and the bin was nowhere to be found,” they wrote on the post on Sunday.
“At first I was like, ‘What [the] heck, [who] has stolen my bin?’ Upon reviewing the doorbell footage I found out the garbage truck ate my bin.”
Their post was titled: “When the council bins your bin.”
The video showed their bin being lifted up to the truck and having its contents emptied. But then it was seen slipping through the mechanical arms and becoming part of the load.
The driver, seemingly unaware, continued on to the next home.
The Reddit user later added that after realising the truck “ate” their bin, they contacted Brisbane City Council to explain what had happened.
“For those wondering, I called council at 10pm. Spoke to a human who arranged to send out a replacement bin,” they wrote in a comment.
“All sorted in five minutes, so well done to Brisbane City Council phone line.”
They also said though that it would have “been nice if the garbage truck driver left a note”.
Other Reddit users remarked they weren’t surprised at what they saw, with some claiming garbage trucks took more bins than most people probably realised.
“I’ve heard that this happens more than you expect. The driver knew what happened and he also knew he couldn’t do anything about it and needed to continue his run,” one wrote.
“He knows the owner will call the council to report it. Council knows it’s common and don’t ask any questions when you call them; they just send a new bin right away.”
A garbo confirmed that this was correct.
“As a garbo this happens regularly,” they said.
“We are not allowed to climb up to pull the bin out by hand for safety reasons.
“A good garbo will note your address and report it so you can have a replacement bin sent out automatically but it’s always best to report that the truck ate your bin in the chance the driver didn’t pass it on.”
Brisbane City Council could not comment on the specific incident but said issues should be reported.
“If there are ever any issues with your rubbish bin collection please contact Council so that we can organise to replace or repair the bin quickly,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.
