Online career coaching firm Resume.io analysed the LinkedIn pages of Australia’s 100 largest companies by market cap — the total value of a company’s shares of stock — to determine which had the very best and very worst retention rates.

It found Aussie steelmaking company BlueScope had the best staff retention rate of all the companies, with its workers staying on for an impressive average of 9.7 years.

Qantas had the second-highest average tenure, holding onto staff for, on average, 8.6 years.

Resource company Alumina Limited came in third place, with an average retention rate of 8.5 years, ahead of supply chain logistics company Brambles, where staff stayed for 8.4 years, on average.

Some companies, however, weren’t so great at convincing workers to stay. In February, data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics found job mobility was at a 10-year high, with more than half of employed Australians having been in their job for five years or less. Younger workers were more likely to flee their jobs than older ones, the ABS found.

According to Resume.io, mining and engineering firms accounted for eight of the 10 lowest average tenures of the companies it analysed.

Battery minerals company Liontown held onto staff for just slightly more than six months, on average.

Tech giant Atlassian was next, with a staff retention rate of 1.1 years, on average, followed by Novonix, with 1.2 years, on average.
