Sydney airport: More than 5000 jobs available across 800 different organisations

An airport in a prominent Australian city has launched a jobs fair frenzy, with more than 5000 positions available in hundreds of businesses.

Sydney airport continues to experience delays

Sydney airport is looking to fill more than 5000 jobs in three weeks in an effort to combat travel delays as the school holidays and long weekend close in.

The jobs fair, which will include opportunities in retail, government agencies and terminal service providers, will be held from 10am to 4pm on June 16.

Around 40 companies will attend the fair, with some businesses from the 800 that operate at the airport ready to hire on the spot.

Sydney airport chief executive Geoff Culbert said the jobs frenzy followed massive job losses during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Fifteen thousand jobs were lost at the airport during the pandemic, and even though everyone started recruiting heavily when borders looked like opening, we’ve still got 5000 roles to fill,” he said.

“Our security contractor and ground handlers have been advertising jobs since December and have brought 500 staff on-board since the start of the year, but they have another 1200 roles to go which is incredibly challenging in this market.”

The fair follows major delays at the airport during the Easter period in April, with almost 40 per cent of arrivals and departures not on time.

The long queues and cancelled flights triggered widespread media attention across the nation, forcing both Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce and Mr Culbert to apologise.
