Australia Post employee praised for ‘cripplingly wholesome’ interaction with customer’s dog

An Australia Post worker has been captured sharing friendly moments with a dog who he has been befriending for the past few weeks.

An Australia Post employee has been applauded for his heartwarming act during a postal delivery this week.

In what has been described as “humanity at its finest”, a TikTok video showed the employee – unaware of anyone watching – have a wholesome interaction with a customer’s pet dog.

After dropping off a Sydney household’s mail, the postie was heard asking their dog, a border terrier named Rory, “are you coming over?” and “come on” in an adorable high-pitched voice.

“What do you have to be frightened of me for? We’re buddies,” he was heard saying.

He then pulled out a bag of treats and begun offering them to the eager pooch.

“I can hand feed you because we’re such good buddies,” the postie said.

The worker handed over several treats to the grateful pup, who gladly accepted each one while sitting down at the gate.

“I think four will do you today alrighty,” he told Rory, before having a swift change of heart.

“All right, I’ll tell you what I’ll do. I’ll drop a couple more and you can finish them after I go,” he was heard saying.

The man then proceeded to drop several more treats into the front yard next to Rory, where they were eagerly scooped up.

As he packed the treats away, he bid the animal farewell and set off for his next delivery.

“All right, see you next time,” he told Rory.

The resident who filmed the sweet interaction said the postie had been developing a friendship with their dog for weeks before they caught it on camera.

Close to 57,000 people have watched the video in just two days, and more than 6000 people have reacted.

“Humanity at its finest. Truest example of an absolute gentleman. Australia Post is indeed lucky to have this man represent the company. Well done mate,” one comment read.

Someone else said it was “the cutest thing ever”, while another described the video “cripplingly wholesome”.

Others warned posties to be mindful that some pets could be allergic to certain treats.

“I think it is really sweet and most likely harmless, but please be careful. You never know what people could be giving your babies,” one wrote.

Another person said they were a former postie and greeting dogs on the delivery one was their favourite part of the job.

An Australia Post spokesperson told news.com.au the company generally encouraged customers to keep their pets secured away from their home’s letterbox.

“Our posties are highly valued members of the local community, and as they deliver to the same home multiple times per week, they get to know residents well, including the local dogs,” they said.

“Safety is our number one priority and while there appears to be no immediate risk here, we do always encourage customers to keep their dogs secured and away from the letterbox to allow our people to deliver mail safely, as even the cutest and most mild-mannered dog can have strong protective instincts and pose a threat or safety concern.”
