‘Wish I started sooner’: 30yo business owner’s huge revenue win

A professional cleaner has shared how much her new business is already making – but the figure has left some scratching their heads.

Immigration ‘does not rate’ as an issue in Australian election

An Aussie has shared her shock and delight at discovering she’s set to make almost $100,000 in revenue in the first financial year of her new business.

Bree O’Connor, 30, was working in corporate customer service and feeling “drained” trying to manage her career and family life.

“I was answering 50 to 60 calls a day and getting home with no mental energy for my kids,” she said.

Somehow, between juggling motherhood and work, it also dawned on her that there was a gap in the market for professional cleaning.

Ms O’Connor, who is based in North Queensland, found that local cleaning services were great but lacking in customer service.

“There was also a gap in the market for a premium and professional cleaning business,” she said.

The 30-year-old said her business is focused on customer inquiries, showing her own face, and branding.

“Cleaners are usually solo and don’t respond to inquiries and don’t have a uniform. My clients have really valued that I am different in this way,” she said.

Ms O’Connor’s business, Flourish Cleaning Co, has boomed within just two months and is set to turn over $96,000 in revenue in 2025.

The young mum took to TikTok to share her almost $100,000 milestone, adding that she wished she had started her own business sooner.

Most commenters were quick to celebrate her business success.

“Wow,” one person wrote.

“Heck yes,” another praised.

“How? That is amazing,” someone else inquired.

However, not everyone was so positive about her sharing her milestone online, with some questioning her $100,000 claim.

One person branded the figure just “projections”, but Ms O’Connor said it was more than that.

“I have 14 clients that I currently service on a weekly or fortnightly basis. This is ongoing work and, based on the amount that they pay each week or fortnight, I will make $96,000 -actually, it’s at $101,000. Hope that helps,” she said.

Another said her claim was ultimately “misleading” because she made it sound like she was making $100,000 within two months.

Someone else jumped in and defended Ms O’Connor and argued people’s negative responses were just “tall poppy syndrome”, and the business owner agreed, saying it “runs rampant” in Australia.

While people online might be divided over how she worded her business success, the 30-year-old is just enjoying it and has even been able to hire employees.

“I have two casuals as well as working in the business three days a week myself, I can take more clients and continue to grow,” she said.

“I love working independently, building client relationships, building a team and I love the business aspect of it.”

The 30-year-old explained that the business is not only making money, but also giving her more room in her life for what is most important to her.

“I get to go home at the end of the day and be present with my children. I don’t dread going to work. I can enjoy my days off,” she said.

That doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of hard work involved. At the end of the day, cleaning sometimes involves some pretty rigorous work.

Ms O’Connor said the “physical nature” of the work has been an adjustment, especially because she’s only seven months post-partum, but she loves the freedom that comes with running her own business.

“Being able to create my own income and see the potential of the business has been really freeing,” she said.

“I take as little as possible as an income for myself and I reinvest the rest through hiring and growing.”
