A man has died while working with a conveyor belt at a salt refinery in Perth’s western suburbs.
A man has died while working at a salt refinery in Perth’s western suburbs.
The employee was working with a conveyor belt at WA Salt Supply when he was caught in the belt on Thursday morning.
Emergency services were called to the North Coogee packaging plant on Cockburn Rd at about 5.20am, but the man died from his injuries at the scene.
WA Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
According to 7 News, staff members were traumatised by the events, crying and consoling each other after the death.
WorkSafe WA confirmed it was notified and was investigating the death.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined.
WorkSafe commissioner Darren Kavanagh said any work-related death was a tragedy and passed on his condolences to the man’s family.
In a statement, WA Salt said all relevant authorities, including WorkSafe WA, were on site and all works at the plant ceased to allow investigations to be carried out.
The company has since commissioned an independent investigation to determine the cause.
“WA Salt can confirm the tragic death of one of our employees, after an incident at our North Coogee packaging plant,” the statement read.
“This is a devastating day for everyone at WA Salt, and our thoughts are with the deceased’s friends, family and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.
“Employee safety and wellbeing is our highest priority, and counselling has been made available for all employees.”
WA Salt Group comprises three businesses that produce, pack and distribute salt products from natural lake sites in the state domestically and internationally.
