Father of young boy identified as man killed in workplace incident

The father of a young boy has been identified as a man who died after suffering a serious head injury when he was struck by a falling piece of equipment at work.

The construction worker who died in a horror workplace incident in Perth’s north has been identified as an Irish father and fiance.

Emergency services were called to a work site on the off ramp of the Mitchell Freeway near Warwick Rd in Greenwood about noon on Thursday.

Barry Breslin, a 35-year-old from Ireland, suffered a serious head injury while working at the site,

St John Ambulance took the man to Royal Perth Hospital; however, Mr Breslan died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The 35-year-old was engaged to his partner, who he shared a young son with.

He reportedly grew up in Donegal in Ireland, however he had lived in Australia for years prior to his death.

His Gaelic football club extended their condolences to Mr Breslin’s loved ones in an emotional tribute on Facebook.

“It was a great shock to us all when the news reached us this morning of the untimely passing of Barry in Australia,” the post read.

“Barry played underage for the club for many years and is fondly remembered by the players and all who were involved at the time.

“And to his mother Mary, a tireless volunteer and supporter of our club over the years, our hearts go out to you and your family and we pass on our prayers to you all at this sad time.”

A WorkSafe spokesperson said Mr Breslin had been “struck by a piece of equipment that fell”, with WorkSafe commissioner Sally North extending her condolences to the 35-year-old’s loved ones, according to 7News.

The CFMEU’s WA branch confirmed the incident was the 10th death at a construction site across the state this year alone.

The union said its investigations had “only just begun”.

“We know that the incident involved an excavator and lifting equipment, (but) we’re not going to speculate on the tragic circumstances until we have the facts,” the union said.

“All we know is that a worker tragically did not return home today.”
