‘Sit all day’: FIFO worker’s salary shocks

A FIFO administration worker has revealed she earns $90,000 a year — describing it as a “pretty cool gig” — but some Aussies reckon she should get a big pay rise.

The young woman, who was stopped on the street in Brisbane for an interview with jobsearch app GetAhead, said, “I just sit in the office all day for two weeks and that’s about it.”

She added however her days are a gruelling 11 hours long, and her role involves booking other FIFO employees’ travel. As part of the arrangement, she gets one week at home for every two weeks of work, and has food and accommodation paid for while she’s on site.

“It’s hard being around all the boys sometimes,” she said of working in such a male-dominated environment, noting “some of them are good” but others can be “a bit feral”.

“I’m on the tools and make twice that,” one FIFO worker said, “Surely they would get at least $120K.”

“Girl you need a pay rise,” said another, while others echoed, “Ask for a pay rise immediately,” and “$90K 2/1? Gurrrllll you can get that in the city.”

According to Career One, the average salary for FIFO admin work is $100,000, with earnings going up to $302,000 a year for very experienced employees.
