Greek design company makes George Costanza’s napping desk a reality
WHO said Greeks were lazy? A Greek design firm has officially turned George Costanza’s famous napping desk into a reality.
FINALLY, here’s a desk we can all actually get behind — or, rather, beneath.
Greek design firm Studio NL has created a prototype of a “nap desk,” a sleek-looking workstation with a lower deck that doubles as a single bed.
From outward appearances, it looks like a normal workstation — but the front of the desk is able to slide out and become a cot, while the side panel opens into an elevated headrest.
It’s ideal for a quick siesta on those draining workdays — or for escaping fluorescent lighting during a particularly gnarly hangover.
The nap desk conjures up the 1997 “Seinfeld” episode “The Nap,” in which George Costanza discreetly sleeps in his office at Yankee Stadium. One day, his boss, a fictionalised George Steinbrenner, hears a ticking noise (George’s alarm clock), mistakes the sound for a bomb, and has the desk destroyed.
Bosses all over the world might react the same way when they discover their lazy employees stowing away like vampires at 3pm.
Although Studio NL apparently created the desk in 2012 — begging the question of whether this ingenious device would ever become a reality — social media is finally exploding with enthusiasm. It’s the sort of grown-up giddiness elicited only by the enticement of a good midday nap — so expect to see the desk on the assembly line soon.
