Female cop who witnessed death of three-year-old girl reminds public ‘we are only human’

A police officer has been praised online for an emotional plea urging trolls not to “penalise the police for having feelings” after difficult jobs.

Coping with grief

A police officer who watched as a three-year-old girl died in front of her after suffering a cardiac arrest has urged trolls to be more understanding when they see a cop having a break.

PC Jade Hunter said on Twitter that if people see police cars outside a coffee shop or fast food restaurant they shouldn’t assume officers are “skiving”.

The West Yorkshire police officer watched as the “amazing” paramedics worked on the tot, but sadly to no avail.

She explained that after some jobs they need to just take a moment to collect their thoughts as they are only human. PC Hunter also made it very clear that the public’s safety is officers number one priority and that typically after an emotionally draining job, like the one she recently experienced, they will be heading to the next job.

Her emotional and honest post touched the hearts of many of her fellow officers.

“Last night myself and five colleagues attended a report of a three year old female in cardiac arrest,” she wrote.

“Jobs like this are especially difficult to deal with, I cannot imagine the pain her parents and siblings are going through now. Being a police officer is not all about catching criminals and this is the side of the job many don’t realise we do.

“So next time you pull up at a local coffee shop or fast food restaurant and see a couple of police cars, please don’t post on social media that we’re ‘having a tea break’ or ‘skiving’. You never know what kind of situation we have attended and dealt with, sometimes we need five or ten minutes to gather our thoughts.

“The public’s safety is our number one priority and it’s often that other jobs like these we are right back out there dealing with the next situation that comes in. However, we are only human too. Please don’t penalise us for having feelings.”

Her message touched the hearts of many on Twitter, with fellow officers agreeing with her plea.

One woman wrote: “You should not have to justify a break to anyone, everyone is entitled to time out … for food or anything.”

Another said: “A job like that warrants a break before you continue. No one should ever question that. I hope you’re feeling OK.”

Another added: “I’m actually trying to ‘catch’ members of our emergency services on a break so I can at least treat them to a coffee and a cake, but unfortunately due to their heavy workload they never seem to have time for a break. I’d be grateful if those who knock would tip me off first!”

Other officers offers words of advice and support to PC Hunter, understanding her plea and offering sympathy and praise.
