Do we get an Anzac Day public holiday this year?

Last year we were spoiled with a blessed run with the calendar allowing for extra long weekends but this year we’re not so fortunate.

How will the coronavirus pandemic end?

In many ways, Australians are looking back begrudgingly at 2019.

Stuck in coronavirus-induced isolation, many are bitterly reflecting on the warm days not spent at the beach, unappreciated time at the pub, and that magical run of public holidays.

It’s 12 months since a huge number of workers capitalised on Anzac Day falling on a Thursday and, by sheer fortune, immediately after Easter.

This meant a 10 day holiday — from Friday, April 18 to Sunday, April 28 inclusive — could have been enjoyed with just three days annual leave being docked.

And it didn’t stop there. Even Australia Day fell on a Monday so a 10 day break would have cost just five working days.

This year, the public holiday gods have not smiled on us.

With Anzac Day falling on a Saturday, workers in most states and territories won’t be given a day off in lieu. Meaning: no long weekend for nearly all of us.

But there are a few exceptions. Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory will treat Monday as a public holiday, as will some regional areas such as Cocos and Keeling Islands and Christmas Island.

“This is a bonus for workers in those areas, but also a much needed time to remember the sacrifices of those brave men and women,” comparison site Finder’s travel expert Bessie Hassan said.

Everyone else will have to front up to work on Monday, wherever and however that looks in the unique coronavirus pandemic world.

Those hoping for an extended weekend might need to wait until the Queen’s Birthday. For all states and territories other than Queensland and WA, taking off the days after the Queen’s Birthday — Tuesday, June 9 to Thursday, June 11 — turns into six days off.
