THEIR first try was branded an iFail - now the marketing minds from Kraft have finalised six choices for the public to rename the new Vegemite spread.

After rejecting iSnack 2.0, consumers will have the final say from a limited list of suggested names for the Vegemite and cream cheese blend, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The options will all be branded as Vegemite, with a choice between these six added tags: Cheesybite, Creamymate, Smooth, Snackmate, Vegemate and Vegemild.

The controversy over iSnack 2.0 had threatened to damage Kraft's most iconic brand after the public competition was decided upon by company marketing boffins.

So strong was the backlash that Vegemite dumped the name just days after unveiling it during the AFL grand final last Saturday.

Kraft corporate affairs head Simon Talbot - the most harried man in Australian marketing today - denied the initial naming was a cynical PR stunt, but admitted the name was "a donkey".

The results of the latest round of voting, which begins online at 5pm (AEST) today and closes at noon on October 5, will be verified by an external market research company and announced on October 7.

Jars of the iSnack 2.0-branded spread will remain on shelves for a number of weeks until a new name is chosen, labels are printed and jars shipped to shops.

Despite the furore the product itself has been popular, with three million jars sold since August.
