Sick days dent the economy

EMPLOYEES who are not fully productive due to sickness or a medical condition cost the economy $34.1 billion, new research shows.

EMPLOYEES who are not fully productive because of sickness or a medical condition cost the Australian economy $34.1 billion in 2009-10, new Medibank research shows.

Medibank Health Solutions general manager Matthew Cullen said employers urgently need to address the situation.

''On average, 6.5 working days of productivity are lost per employee annually and the overall cost of $34.1 billion equates to a decrease in gross domestic product by 2.7 per cent,'' Mr Cullen said. ''If we are to minimise further negative effects ... we need to invest in the health of staff.''
