Queensland mum’s genius item lands on Bunnings shelves

Six years ago, a Queensland mum came up with a genius idea for carrying buckets of dirty nappies – and now it’s being sold in Bunnings.

Six years ago, Queensland mum-of-three Kelly Lavery was searching far and wide for an easier way to carry buckets of dirty nappies.

In her late 30s at the time, Ms Lavery had just had a “whoops” baby – throwing her “back into the trenches of motherhood” that were far messier than she remembered.

“Putting my hand in a bucket of soaking nappies was like putting it in a dirty toilet! I hated it and wanted a better way,” the Sunshine Coast mum said.

She went looking for a product that would allow no-touch soaking of laundry items – but couldn’t find anything like it. And so, she created one, and named it the Strucket.

The product is the world’s first strainer meet bucket – and swiftly won the hearts of families across Australia by modernising the way they soak, separate and drain their goods.

Designed to fit inside the laundry sink, the award-winning product is built to handle the weight of wet clothes without users losing their balance.

It works exactly like a bucket – the only difference is that when you need to drain it you simply pull the strainer section inside the bucket upwards, meaning you can avoid getting dirty water everywhere during the strainer process.

Ms Lavery started selling the product online and then to smaller retailers and the nappy industry.

There are now more than 150,000 Strucket’s now in Australian homes, used for everything from sanitising nappies and disinfecting head lice equipment to cleaning engine parts and moonlighting as a sink while camping.

And in June, Bunnings came calling, wanting to stock the Strucket in their warehouses across the country.

“It’s quite a surreal feeling knowing that the store that I originally went to in search of a Strucket some six years ago, now stocks the Strucket on their shelves,” Ms Lavery said.

Speaking to News Corp Australia, Ms Lavery said the sky was the limit – with the Buderim-based company now looking to expand offshore.

“We’re deep diving into our export strategy,” she said.

“We sell in the US and UK and a little bit in Europe but we are looking at growing in the Americas in 2022.”
