One word sums up shop owner’s heartbreak as small business forced to close its doors
The latest victim of the cost of living crisis is a chicken shop forced to close its doors as staff shortages and inflation strangle small businesses.
A crowd-favourite eatery in the Glenelg community of South Australia has shocked locals with a note on the front door revealing it has been forced to close its doors for good.
The news comes as small businesses across the country – particularly in hospitality – struggle to stay afloat, with skyrocketing prices and widespread staff shortages.
Chick N’ Chips has been beloved by the local community for offering a range of gluten-free menu items and free-range produce.
A regular customer turned to Reddit on Tuesday to share his grief over the shocking news on a note taped to the restaurant’s front door simply titled “Goodbye”.
“With great sadness Chick N’ Chips has closed permanently,” the note read.
“As most of you know, rising operational costs, coupled with lack of staffing, are issues that have hit many small businesses hard and we are now one of them.”
The owner offered their thanks to the shop’s staff.
“The business wanted to give special shout-outs to those who have played a big part in the success of the shop,” they said.
“The whole team will forever be grateful for your dedication and hard work. Our customers will miss you, honestly one of the hardest working, passionate workers … we simply cannot thank you enough.”
“To all of our staff, no matter how long or short you were with us, we appreciate everyone of you.”
They also shared their thanks to the community whose support kept the doors open for as long as possible.
“We hope we filled your tummies with the most delicious gluten-free food, your constant support hasn’t gone unnoticed,” they said.
“We thank you for your support and from the bottom of our hearts, we are so sorry.
“With love, Chick N’ Chips”
Reddit users expressed their sadness over the loss of so many adored small businesses this year.
“Gutted I never made it there to try it out,” one user wrote.
“Please everyone, support small business now – shop looks good? Want to try it? Don‘t wait!,” another said.
“So many restaurants for sale or closing lately … shame,” a third said.
Hospitality businesses across the country are scrambling ahead of the peak summer season as slowed overseas migration has created widespread staff shortages.
Last month, Sydney Restaurant Group offered up a $5k sign-on bonus to new staff to beat out competition in the shrinking employee market.
