Many small businesses and sole traders in NSW will be eligible for a new $1500 rebate from next month.

The rebate announced by the state government can be used to pay off government fees such as licences, council rates and vehicle registration fees.

The scheme was first announced as part of last year’s NSW budget but will kick in from early April this year.

The money will be available to those businesses and non-profit organisations that don’t pay payroll tax. The payroll tax threshold is set at $1.2m for the current financial year.

“This will help hundreds more businesses, along with entrepreneur and family businesses across the state, ensuring they have more money in their pockets as NSW continues its post-pandemic recovery,“ NSW Small Business Minister Damien Tudehope said.

Other examples of acceptable uses for the money include food authority licences, liquor licences, tradesperson licences and event fees.

“The NSW government has committed close to $500m for the new scheme, which shows our commitment to small businesses which are the lifeblood of the NSW economy, supporting more than one million jobs,“ NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said.

Eligible business owners will be reimbursed through Service NSW after paying the fees.

The scheme runs until June 30 next year.
