THEY’RE cool, young and filthy rich.

BRW has released its Young Rich List again and it’s a pantheon of jealousy and bitter grumblings — for those of us not on it.

So who tops the illustrious under-40, self-made rich list?

Young gun darlings of the tech world, Atlassian co-founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar sit atop the mountain of rich kids with their combined $2.1 billion wealth. Yes, that’s billion with a ‘b’. That figure has grown enormously from the $550 million they were worth at a year ago thanks to a $3 billion valuation the company achieved earlier this year.

Atlassian consistently tops ‘best employers’ and ‘best places to work’ honours.

The mid-thirties Cannon-Brookes and Farquhar founded the software company in 2002 and in the 12 intervening years, has grown the business to an 800-strong firm who counts NASA and Tesla among its clients.

The next two Young Rich Listers, Dave Greiner and Ben Richardson, are debutantes. Their email marketing business, Campaign Monitor, scored a big investment this year, which pegged the pair’s wealth at $500 million.

Technology entrepreneur Simon Clausen is fifth on the list with a wealth of $487 million, up from $350 million a year. His coffers shot up mainly because of the increasing value of his Freelancer shares.

Online retail entrepreneur Ruslan Kogan comes in sixth on the list with his $349 million wealth while Patrick Grove, who boasts several ASX-listed entities including iCar Asia, has $344 million.

Rounding out the top 11 are Owen Kerr, who holds equity in foreign exchange broker Pepperstone, The Catch Group co-founder Hezi Leibovich and entrepreneurs Gavin Fernandez and George Nakas, whose assets include James Lane Motors and Dutton Wholesale.

Mirroring worldwide trends, technology was the most dominant sector on the Young Rich List, taking the 30 spots.
