Scott Morrison will play a role in Qld election campaign

Queensland’s opposition leader is looking forward to having the Prime Minister support her as state enters election mode.

Queensland’s election campaign will be joined by the Prime Minister, the state’s opposition leader has confirmed.

While no date has been announced yet, LNP leader Deb Frecklington told ABC Radio on Tuesday morning she was looking forward to having “ScoMo” join her on the campaign trail.

“It will be wonderful to have him on the campaign trail,” Ms Frecklington said.

“When that is … will be announced by the Prime Minister.”

On Tuesday, Queensland’s parliament was dissolved and the campaign officially begun ahead of the October 31 election.

Current border controls mean Mr Morrison could only enter Queensland if he had not been in a declared hotspot, which includes most of NSW and all of Victoria, in the last 14 days.

Mr Morrison is in Canberra on Tuesday ahead of the federal budget.

Before Queensland opened its borders to the ACT last month, Queensland’s Deputy Premier said there would be no special treatment for Mr Morrison to enter the state for the election and AFL Grand Final.

In reply, Mr Morrison said he would have done what everyone else had to do if he wanted to enter Queensland.

“I don’t think there should be double standards,” he said.

The option of entering Queensland for the election and grand final changed a day later.

Canberrans wanting to enter Queensland now have to fly into the state, and prove they have not been in a hot spot in the previous 14 days.

It comes as Ms Frecklington changes her tune on the state’s border control measures, saying she will follow the advice of Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young.

Labor has heavily pushed the messaging that the LNP called for Queensland’s borders to be opened “64 times” during the first COVID-19 wave, but on Tuesday Ms Frecklington said she would do the right thing by Queenslanders.

Ms Frecklington said she would “always listen to the health advice”, even if that meant keeping the borders closed for 28 days which is the chief health officer’s current guideline.

“I’m thankful Queenslanders have done everything that’s been asked of them. We’ve been really fortunate because Queenslanders have stuck to the rules,” she said.

“In terms of the borders, we accept the determination of the chief health officer (Dr Jeannette Young). We’ve always said the borders shouldn’t be shut a day longer than they need to be.

“We agree with the health advice of the CHO, and we see there’s been an easing of restrictions on the border.”

ABC host Craig Zonca pressed the Opposition Leader on her contrasting statements surrounding the border.

“Early on you were saying open the borders, contrary to advice … Now are you saying you will follow that advice?” Zonca asked.

“That is correct,” Mrs Frecklington responded.

“At the time, there was no health advice for them to be shut … We called for that health advice to be released but it wasn’t.”

It comes as NSW is hoping for an eleventh straight day of no community transmission in the state.

Despite opening the Queensland border up to parts of northern NSW last week, Dr Young has repeatedly said Queensland would not open its borders to the rest of NSW until the state recorded 28 days of no community transmission.

NSW is on track to reach that milestone on October 22, with a November 1 reopening included in the Queensland Government’s newest road map to a COVID-Safe future.

Queensland recorded no new cases on Monday.
