Yarra Ranges: Award-winning architect John Denton’s unusual pad with its own winery could set new price record
Award-winning architect John Denton’s eye-catching house with its own winery is on track to set a new eight-figure benchmark for the Yarra Ranges. See how much it could sell for.
An unusually designed home owned by award-winning architect John Denton is on track to set a new eight-figure benchmark for the Yarra Ranges.
The eye-catching property at 160 Old Healesville Rd, Tarrawarra, complete with its own winery, is turning heads after hitting the market with a $13.5m-$14.85m price tag.
If it sells at this price point, the sprawling estate will become the priciest home in the suburb, as well as in the wider Yarra Ranges locality.

The local government area’s current house price record was set by the $5.63m sale of 670 Wellington Rd, Lysterfield, in 2021, while the Tarrawarra record lies with the $2.375m sale of 386 Healesville-Yarra Glen Rd in 2019.
Stretching across 60.66ha, the Old Healesville Rd property boasts a striking design by its owner, esteemed Australian architect Mr Denton, who engaged Skate Constructions to bring his vision to life.
The unique facade could be likened to an art sculpture, constructed with steel and glass in a distinctive design reminiscent of two large shipping containers stacked asymmetrically.
Mr Denton said the pad was one in a series of houses in rural settings designed by his firm, Denton Corker Marshall, to contrast “crisp, minimal architectural forms against its rural landscape setting”.
While the surrounding 32ha of vineyard was established in 1997, the house was constructed in 2011, followed by the installation of a working winery in 2019.
It produces pinot noir, cabernet, nebbiolo, shiraz, ribolla gialla and chardonnay drops under the label Denton Wines.
The house, business and vineyard are all included in the sale, as is the winery, machinery shed, and an airconditioned storage space that could be easily converted into a cellar door shop front.
“The decision to reluctantly sell was driven by the need to pull back from running a large wine business,” Mr Denton added.
“I would have loved to have kept the house but it’s tied to the wine business.”
Inside the home, a spacious, open floor plan juxtaposes natural tones with a sleek elegance, most noticeable in the stylish kitchen and through the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the vineyard.
Other lavish features include a huge main bedroom with an adjoining ensuite, two home offices upstairs, and a temperature controlled wine room.
Kay & Burton Flinders executive director Tom Barr Smith and agent Sasha Romensky have the luxe listing in conjunction with Langley & Co Advisors director Stephen Strachan.
