Yarra Ranges: Art deco mansion with Edna Walling garden could smash new Sherbrooke record
A 100-year-old property with a Hollywood-style pool and tennis court, which goes for more than $1000 per night to Airbnb guests, is ready to blossom under the care of a new owner.
A century-old Yarra Ranges stunner featuring a Hollywood-style pool and gardens by an industry icon is ready to sweep a new owner off their feet.
The circa-1920 property named Selsdon Park blends art deco and art nouveau design with modern day style at 23 Sherbrooke Rd, Sherbrooke.
Set on 2.86ha near Sherbrooke Forest, a sweeping driveway brings visitors to the house’s garden created by one of Australia’s most influential landscape designers, the late Edna Walling.

LongView Property Advisory buyer and vendor’s advocate, Brad Straughair, said the “magnificent” Selsdon Park garden included a fountain, tennis court and self-contained cottage with a conservatory entry, timber wainscoting, window seats, kitchen and bathroom.
Mr Straughair said the home’s owner described the solar heated in-ground pool and spa as “Hollywood-style pool” due to its glamorous setting among palm trees and plants in urns.
The two-storey main house boasts three living areas, accompanied by two bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs.
Another two bedrooms and bathroom are located downstairs.
The master bedroom includes a ensuite and walk-in wardrobe.
The kitchen has Jarrah bench tops, a communal breakfast bar, 900mm stainless steel cooker, wine fridge and dishwasher.
Other impressive features include a library, stone fireplaces and a formal lounge opening to a brand-new deck.
Mr Straughair said Selsdon Park’s owner originally purchased the property as a weekend getaway but ended up leasing the home to Airbnb guests for more than $1000 per night.
He said 10 to 12 people could comfortably sleep at the home.
“It is what I would call a bit of a triple threat, the property could be used an owner-occupier, as a weekend retreat or an investment,” Mr Straughair said.
“It’s a bit of a unicorn, in that it offers so much.”
Mr Straughair said the property was suited to extended families or people wanting to work remotely.
“The cottage is great, if the owner/occupier wants to work from home it could be their office or used by older kids who want their own space,” he said.
Bell Real Estate Olinda agent Corinne Sukroo said Selsdon Park had “captured everyone’s imaginations” with many interested buyers marvelling at its picturesque setting.
“The grounds and the pool are gorgeous,” Ms Sukroo said.
The house is being offered for private sale with $2.69m-$2.95m price hopes.
If the home sells in this range it will set a new house price record for Sherbrooke overtaking the current $2.675m record set by 6 Nobles Lane in 2018.
The property is short drive to Belgrave, Puffing Billy, the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens and the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk.
The Upper Gully train station is about a 10-minute drive away and Melbourne’s CBD about a 45-50 minute drive.
