The Newtown home artist Tom Arthur built on 30 years of “labour and love” is for sale
Built on 30 years of “labour and love”, artist Tom Arthur shares the inside story behind his iconic Newtown home that could break the suburb record next month.
After more than 30 years of calling Station St home, renowned artist Tom Arthur and his wife Sandra are selling their iconic Newtown property.
Due to go to auction next month on August 31, the four-bedroom home has a $5.5 million price guide.
A sale around this price point would see the house break the Newtown residential record that was set in 2017, when 20-28 Munni St sold for $3.85 million, according to CoreLogic data.

The couple purchased the property in 1985 and completed an extensive renovation of the former masonic hall.
Mr Arthur, who completed one the earliest legal warehouse conversions in Newtown, said converting this building was a whole other thing. “It has been 30 years of labour and love, but we really wanted to preserve the original design and the ambience of the hall.”
The Newtown home has an impressive artist’s studio that takes up almost the entire basement. It features an 11.8 metre by 10 metre workshop, as well as an additional separate studio.

The rest of the property almost looks like an art gallery with different pieces of art and artefacts scattered throughout every room.
The building is also unique in the sense that the walls do not go up to 4.8 metre-high ceiling, something Mr Arthur said was intentional.
“We did this as the ceilings are beautiful and it creates a sense of grandeur,” he said.
With his daughter and grandchildren set to move to into their own home, Mr Arthur said after 30 years, now was the time to move on.
“I’m still in a state of denial that we are leaving, but now seems like the right time to move on to our next chapter,” he said.
When the property goes to auction next month with The Agency’s Ben Collier and David Talone, Mr Arthur hopes the new owner is someone who will appreciate the architecture and the building.
