Critical shortage of stock on the northern beaches
It has been in the Seaman family ever since it was built in 1918. There were only a handful of houses that dotted the hill overlooking Palm Beach back then.
It was an area that had become known as Pill Hill, owing to fact that most of the homes were owned by wealthy doctors.
Except for this one, which was built by the late Laurie Seaman, who worked in the insurance industry.
Sadly, Mr Seaman sadly didn’t get to spend nearly enough time at the home, which was built from sandstone quarried on site.
He died in a skiing accident in Charlotte’s Pass in 1928, along with his friend, Evan Hayes. It was the first skiing fatality in the history of the Australian Alps.
His second son, also called Laurie, had not yet been born when he died. Mr Seaman’s widow Christine Seaman raised their two sons at the house.
Laurie Junior took over the house when she was in her later years. He dedicated himself to preserving it and the surrounding gardens up until his death earlier this year at the age of 90.
His widow, Elizabeth Seaman, said Seabell, as the estate was known, was his pride and joy.
“It’s such a unique home, it’s got such wonderful light and warmth about it,” she said.”
But now that she is on her own, the home is just too big for her.
“It is time to pass it on,” she said. “I don’t know how I am going to leave it though, it has been such a happy home and there are just so many memories.”
And so Seabell has come to market for the first time, offering a rare opportunity for someone to own not only a piece of real estate, but a piece of history as well.
Set on a 2072sqm block, the home makes the most of its wonderful northeast aspect, and the views that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Spread over three levels, the home still has all the hallmarks of yesterday, including sandstone fireplaces, original hardwood floors and beamed ceilings.
Outside the beautiful gardens are complemented by meandering stone pathways and sitting areas, Mr Seaman’s pride and joy.
He opened the gardens to visiting seniors groups who would come to picnic there. The property goes to auction on August 29, with a guide of $5 million, through Noel Nicholson, of Ray White Prestige Palm Beach.
