An inner-city studio apartment has hit the market with a significant price tag and an unusual floor plan, in another indication of the great squeeze in the Sydney rental market where availability in some markets is next to zero.
Dubbed a ‘room with a poo’ the Surry Hills pad has been listed for lease at $520 a week.
The listing claims the home is ‘chic’ and for someone who ‘craves simplicity’.

But the toilet set up goes even further than the old Paddington terraces, where the water closet sits adjacent to the kitchen, in turn creating hygeien concerns.
That out dated set up was due to ancient plumbing infrastructure, so we’re not really sure how this Bourke St pad ended up with the toilet literally peering into the kitchen.
The renters would be doing their business, just an arm’s length from where they prepare their meals.
Fortunately the kitchen and bathroom are separated by a thick pane of frosted glass, so there is a modicum of privacy.

“If you are looking for a City Chic pad to come home to, then look no further!,” the listing reads.
“Centrally located in the Vibrant hub of the City Fringe, this STUDIO apartment will suit the urban dweller who craves simplicity and style that this apartment has to offer, as well living in the vibrant and culturally diverse suburb of Surry Hills.”
According to Proptrack, the supply of properties for rent across Sydney in September 2022 was 35.7 per cent lower than at the beginning of the pandemic.
Rents in Sydney have only increased by 5.8 per cent since the beginning of the pandemic. Sydney’s rental growth has been moderate compared to most other regions of the country, meaning there’s room for further growth.
