‘Tranquillity in the bush’: NT property where Adam Britton tortured, murdered and raped dogs for sale

The scene of unspeakable acts of bestiality, animal torture, and murder has hit the market as the once-esteemed Australian zoologist responsible nears his fate.

In September last year, well-known Northern Territory crocodile expert Adam Britton, who holds a PhD and worked as a Senior Research Associate at Charles Darwin University, admitted to running a “torture room” in a shipping container at his McMinns Lagoon property.

The home where Adam Britton carried out many of his sadistic crimes has been listed for sale.

It was revealed he filmed himself raping and killing dogs he acquired by desperate pet owners seeking to rehome their animals.

The disgraced crocodile expert, who reportedly once hosted David Attenborough, also kept a pet five-metre saltwater crocodile named Smaug at the property.

Britton’s life of scientific esteem came to an abrupt halt last year after the 52-year-old admitted to killing at least 39 dogs which he labelled “f*** toys”, raping puppies, running a “torture room”, and helping others navigate “zoo-sadism”.

The details of his case, heard in September 2023, were so hardcore that Chief Justice Michael Grant excused some court staff from the courtroom to spare them the details of the crimes.

“The facts contain material describing acts that can only be described as grotesque perversity and cruelty which are both confronting and distressing and which in my assessment have the potential to cause nervous shock,” he said, as per the NT News.

The court heard that Britton, a British expat, set up alerts on Gumtree for when a new dog or puppy was listed for sale in the Darwin area before convincing “reluctant” owners he was a good fit to care for their pets.

The owners of a large brown dog named “Wolfe” met with Britton twice to “ensure he would be a suitable person”.

It was reported that Britton would follow up with the owners while the animal was in his care with messaged like “Wolfe was relaxed and eating well and enjoying her new home”.

“Unbeknownst to the previous owners the dogs had already been sexually exploited, tortured and killed,” Crown prosecutor Marty Aust told the court in September.

Britton also chatted with others using an encrypted messaging service, where he discussed bestiality, animal abuse, sourcing pets and disposing dogs once dead.

“Owner is looking for a good ‘forever home’ for their beloved pooch, make sure you offer them one … telling them you want a new family member after your old dog died from cancer last year hardly ever fails,” Britton posted from an account called ‘Monster’, as heard in court last year.

A search also found 15 child abuse material files on Britton’s laptop that he had sourced online.

Britton pleaded guilty to 37 charges, including animal cruelty causing serious harm or death, 10 counts of raping or attempting to rape a dog, four counts of possessing or transmitting child abuse material, animal cruelty, and using a carriage service in an offensive way.

Britton has been in police custody since his arrest over two years ago, but last week, his three-bedroom property on a large block near Humpty Doo – 40 minutes from Darwin – was listed by an independent realtor for $790,000 with its address “available on request”.

The listing describes Britton’s home as “Tranquillity in the bush” on a “2.5 acre corner block is nestled in the heart of McMinns Lagoon”.

“Troppo Architects have designed a stunning extension to this two bedroom, one bathroom ground level home,” it boasts.

Britton’s three-bedroom property near Humpty Doo, which he bought for $250,000 in 2004, has been listed for sale by an independent realtor for $790,000, despite Britton being in police custody for over two years.

The listing highlights the property’s ‘Tranquillity in the bush’ setting, a stunning extension designed by Troppo Architects, an outdoor pavilion with 360-degree views, and a resort-style swimming pool.

Despite its owner’s depraved past, the listing images show an open-plan home nestled among tropical shrubs and palms, with its description providing a glowing pitch.

“Upstairs is the third bedroom with Troppo’s hallmark architecture, which responds to the climate and local setting,” the listing continues.

“The resort-style swimming pool is a size that will impress any family.”

Real estate records show Britton bought the property in January 2004 for $250,000.
