TikToker shocked to discover what $400 gets renters in each capital city

A woman has shared her shattering discovery about one city’s rental affordability, leaving many stunned over the findings.

A TikToker has divided Australians over the state of the rental market in each capital city after claiming there is nowhere to rent in Sydney for under $400.

Twenty-two-year-old Sam shared the video comparing what $400 can buy renters in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Darwin and Adelaide.

The video, which now has 1.3 million views, shows it’s possible to find a one-bedroom apartment in all of Australia’s cities except Sydney.

In Melbourne, Sam was even able to find a modern two-bedroom unit.

She claims a rental property for $400 a week “doesn’t exist” in Sydney’s CBD.

However, a single parking space is available for rent for the same price per month.

The video has since drawn comments from all over the country, with equally frustrated renters shedding light on the reality of rental markets in their own cities.

“Idk where you found that Melbourne apartment, because you’re not getting anything for under $600 a week,” one user wrote.

“The two beds in Melbourne have tiny little bedrooms with sliding doors for walls and fit barely more than a queen bed,” another said.

In the sunshine state, the prices might be lower than in Sydney and Melbourne, but the condition of the properties available to renters is just as dire, according to some reactions to the video.

“I paid $350p/w in Brisbane to live in a studio apartment that had lead flakes in the water, black mould and water leaks everywhere,” one user wrote.

Some Sydneysiders commented that the video’s claims were an exaggeration, revealed their personal success stories of finding suitable places to rent.

“My apartment is in the city; one bed for $400 in Sydney,” one user said.

“My apartment in Sydney is $350 a week,” another added.
