Sydney rental lets you ‘cook dinner and do laundry from bed’

A $1600 studio apartment in Sydney has left potential tenants scratching their heads over one bizarre detail.

3D printed houses could be the rental crisis solution

A studio apartment advertised for rent in Sydney has left potential tenants scratching their heads over a bizarre detail.

The tiny $410 a week property in Summer Hill in Sydney’s inner west features an oven and washing machine stacked on top of each other, mere centimetres from the room’s bed.

The listing states that it is a “fully self contained studio”, complete with a bed, mattress, TV, fridge, washing machine and dryer.

The advertisement does not have any details about the bathroom.

After photographs of the studio were posted to a Facebook group, many potential tenants shared their opinions of the property.

Many were concerned about the proximity of the oven, with many stating the food smells and heat from it would be overwhelming in the small room.

Others joked that it could be very handy, as one could cook their dinner without having to get out of bed.

“You could use your feet to open the oven door and chuck your dinner in,” one commented.

“Then use your other foot to chuck your washing in after you got it dirty from eating on the bed.”

“$410 a week, does that include therapy session for the impending claustrophobia?” another asked. “But I mean, I’m all for doing my laundry and cooking without getting out of bed.”

“Every time I think we’ve hit rock bottom, Sydney goes and lowers the bar.” commented one.

“It looks like you’re renting someone’s kitchen.”

Others were more open to the idea, pointing out that it could be the perfect property for a single person.

“In London, this would be considered a palace and a steal,” one said.

“It looks like a standard studio apartment.”

“It’s a very nice inner city apartment,” commented another.

“Not too bad for one person.”

Impacts of the current rental crisis have been felt around the country.

Many vulnerable house hunters have fallen victim to a cruel scam targeting desperate renters looking for somewhere to live by baiting them with prices too good to be true.

Shocking text messages have revealed how “landlords” are luring in potential victims by advertising attractive properties with lower than usual rental prices.

After gaining interest, they will then ask the desperate person looking to rent to pay a deposit to be able to go and view the property.

Sydneysider Cihan Kenar almost fell victim to this scam after inquiring about a three-bedroom, freestanding house situated around his local area of Rosebery and advertised for $400 a week.

Despite this being well below market price at the moment, he decided it was worth at least going for an inspection.

However, after agreeing to a time to meet up, the “landlord” texted last minute to cancel – but offered an alternative solution.

They asked if Mr Kenar would be willing to pay a deposit to come see the house, and said if he did not like the property, he would be able to get a refund.

Thankfully, he did not fall victim to this, but others have not been so lucky.

Many have paid “deposits” only to be ghosted by the “landlord”.
