AJ McCrady had noticed a “horrible smell” in his flat – before discovering the awful truth behind a mysterious stain on his walls.

Run-down rentals: Your rights as a tenant

A pair of flatmates claim to have made a horrific discovery after noticing a strange tar-like substance dripping from the ceiling of their flat.

AJ McCrady, from Minneapolis in the US, took to Twitter recently to share photos and details of the terrifying saga.

The car salesman claimed he had noticed the “random black tar” on his walls along with a “horrible” smell – and a maintenance worker later found his upstairs neighbour’s body.

“My apartment has smelt horrible recently and I just found out the guy living above me has been dead for over a week … and before you ask, his body was just discovered after his blood leaked down the ceiling into our apartment this morning,” Mr McCrady posted on Twitter alongside a photo of the leakage.

The post soon went viral, attracting more than 40,000 retweets, almost 200,000 likes and thousands of comments, prompting Mr McCrady to follow up his initial tweet with further details.

“Maintenance stopped by and had no idea what the hell it could be. He wiped off a little on the wall to examine it and still really couldn’t determine anything. He went upstairs into the apartment above to see if they had the same problem and that’s when the body got discovered,” he wrote.

He also shared a picture of his neighbour’s apartment that appeared to be sealed off following the alleged discovery.

“All I really know of the situation is the man upstairs died in his sleep. His body decomposed and somehow managed to seep into our apartment. We’ve had leaking in our bathroom so when we saw this we called maintenance immediately,” Ms McCrady continued.

While some fellow Twitter users doubted the stories, others reacted with horror and sympathy.

“So you’re gonna move out right?????” one person questioned, while another added: “Do y’all know how bad a decomposed body smells??! My gosh! This is so awful and gross!!!”

“Oh no. It’s so sad that you can be absent from this world for over a week and NO ONE finds it odd. We need to be more connected,” another person wrote.

According to The Sun, Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder told local media a body had been discovered in the apartment but officers had found nothing suspicious when they investigated the scene.
