Eye-watering rental price for ‘room with a poo’ in Surry Hills

The weekly rental price for this Sydney studio has jumped $140 in two years despite the room having one “disturbing” feature.

The insanity of Sydney‘s infamous property market has again been put on display with an inner-city studio apartment listed for rent with the toilet just centimetres away from the kitchen.

Labelled a “room with a poo”, the small Surry Hills property is listed at an eye-watering $520 a week.

‘Simplicity is not simple in Surry Hills,’ the ad for the property reads.

The bathroom is only separated from the kitchen by a set of semi-frosted glass doors, with a full view of the toilet from where the bed is situated in the display photos.

Described as a “City Chic pad”, Raine & Horne real estate agents have said the apartment is perfect for someone who “craves simplicity and style”.

The weekly price has jumped by $140 after it was last listed for $380 in 2020 when images of the listing circulated online.

“This is my worst nightmare … Imagine having a bloke over and he needed to have a sh*t,” one person commented on a video of the property.

The bed has a full view of the throne room.

“The bathroom looks kinda like some strange torture chamber, but it‘s the kitchen that will become the main place of torture anytime someone sh*ts while you are trying to cook a lovely meal,” another said.

Despite the apartment‘s features, the substantial jump in price reflects the state of Sydney’s rental market.

Median weekly rents have risen by 10.3 per cent in the past year, the highest on record according to the latest PropTrack Market Insight report.

Australia is experiencing the “tightest rental market we’ve ever seen” according to PropTrack director of economic research and report author Cameron Kusher.

The median rental cost in Sydney sits at $640 per week for a home and $520 for a unit.

In just a year, the cost of renting a home has jumped by 12.3 per cent, with unit costs rising by a lower rate of 8.3 per cent.
