PERTH’S tallest apartment skyscraper is planned for near Northbridge as part of high-rise building boom.

Plans are due to be submitted this month and, if approved, it will be one of three residential towers housing 600 flats at the corner of Beaufort and Roe streets.

Fender Katsalidis Architects, the firm behind the Southern Hemisphere’s first 100-storey building at Melbourne’s Southbank, has designed the landmark building.

It’s understood the skyscraper will be taller than the 38-level residential development being built at Adelaide Tce and close to the height of Brookfield Place.

The $500m redevelopment of the former Megamart site, near Perth Central Station, is the latest in a flood of high-rise developments planned for land in and around Northbridge.

In the past three months alone, developers in Perth, the eastern states and Asia have submitted plans totalling almost $350m for Northbridge and the CBD fringe.

Ageing buildings, car parks and empty plots are slated to make-way for hotels, office blocks and hundreds of apartments if the plans ae given the go-ahead.

A relaxation of City of Perth planning restrictions and the Perth City Link project, which has sunk the railway dividing the CBD and Northbridge, have stimulated investment.

Nightclub owners, however, fear they will be forced out if their venues are not protected from the influx of residents.

Court Hotel owner Bree Maddox, whose Beaufort St bar neighbours the triple-tower proposal, said long-established late-night venues “could potentially be under threat by residents moving in.”
