Valentine’s Day: Suburbs where you’re most likely to find love

Whether it’s a mining town or a beachside suburb, where you live could determine your chances of finding love.

How much could you save from interest rate cuts?

If you’re looking for love this Valentine’s Day, where you live might just help — or hinder — your chances.

Ray White has run the numbers and found the top suburbs for singles, with Sydney’s inner southwest a bachelor’s paradise and Sydney’s eastern suburbs Australia’s answer to Sex and the City.

Ray White Group senior data analyst Atom Go Tian said the country’s most concentrated population of single men is in Lakemba, with 252 single men for every 100 single women.

“Sydney’s dominance in the bachelor scene is clear, with its inner south-west and inner west regions claiming half of Australia’s top 10 male-majority suburbs,” Mr Tian said.

“Melbourne’s south-east has also emerged as a notable bachelor paradise, creating another hub

for single men with four spots.

“The property landscape in these bachelor-dense areas shows remarkable diversity, ranging from the more accessible Melbourne suburb of Doveton at $613,717 to the upscale Strathfield-East in Sydney commanding $3m.”

On the flip side, Mr Tian said Sydney’s eastern suburbs had an impressive concentration of single women.

Seven of the nation’s top 10 female-majority suburbs are found in Sydney, with five nestled in the prestigious eastern suburbs and two in North Sydney. Melbourne’s Elwood and Port Melbourne also make the list.

These areas typically come with a luxury price tag, with most suburbs in the $3m to $4m range.

Sometimes love can come cheap, so for those seeking a more budget-friendly option, Brisbane’s Yarrabilba stands out with a median home price of $703,643.

When it comes to the regions, Western Australia, outside of Perth, tops the charts with 124 single men for every 100 single women, followed by regional South Australia with 117 single men.

Mr Tian said the romantic imbalance likely stemmed from the resources boom, with Western Australia hosting over a third of Australia’s 350-plus mining sites.

Among the major cities, Perth holds the largest imbalance with 112 single men per 100 single

women.

The Northern Territory, outside of Darwin, stands as the only region where single women slightly outnumber men.

What about when it comes to buying property? JLF Group managing director James Fitzgerald said singles sometimes had the upper hand when it came to borrowing power.

“It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that having two incomes is often the ticket to cracking

into the property market,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“But, before you start feeling like a single person is doomed to a life of renting and popcorn dinners, let me tell you something … it’s not the end of the world if you’re flying solo.

“Without someone else’s living expenses to account for, you could end up with a stronger

borrowing position than a couple.”

Mr Fitzgerald said it was not until a couple earned a combined income of $200,000 that their

borrowing power exceeded a single person’s.

“Even when kids come into the picture, singles still seem to be doing well,” he said.

“Singles often have a little extra financial breathing room — especially at lower income levels.

“Two incomes are certainly helpful, but it’s not the end of the world if you’re doing it alone.”
