A WA estate has won Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star Communities rating for a residential masterplanned community.

The green accolade has been given to Alkimos Beach in Perth’s northern coastal corridor after winning the award from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

The first 240ha of the 710ha community is being developed by Lend Lease and LandCorp and is the most significant coastal development north of Perth in 50 years.

GBCA’s chief executive Romilly Madew said that Lend Lease had achieved many “firsts” in the sustainability space over more than a decade, but up until now these have all been in buildings and fit-outs.

“This 6 Star Green Star rating for a community project sets the bar for world leadership community development and demonstrates a long-term commitment to sustainability at scale,” Ms Madew said.

Chief executive of Lend Lease’s property business in Australia Tarun Gupta said the company was very proud to achieve a national first.

The project site will eventually host 3.6ha of playing fields, 6ha of conservation reserves and 41ha of dune and foreshore reserves. All homes will be within 800m of both the local centre and transport links.

Thirty per cent of the site will be reserved for open space and no home will be more than 200 metres from a park.

Walking and cycle paths will link the beach, the town centre and the train station and Wi-Fi will be provided in major public spaces to foster economic and social opportunities.

LandCorp chief executive Frank Marra said a key focus was growing WA in a planned and sustainable way.

“We are delighted that our Alkimos Beach project has been recognised by the nation’s authority on sustainable buildings and communities and acknowledged as a world leading development with global significance,” Mr Marra said.

Upon completion, the first stage will deliver more than 2,000 homes for 6,000 residents.

The council said it was the nation’s authority on sustainable buildings and communities.

GBCA operated Australia’s only national, voluntary, holistic rating system for sustainable buildings and communities.

Alkimos is located 42km north of Perth and is named after the shipwreck of the Greek freighter Alkimos which ran aground on the coast nearby in 1963.

The area is part of the Alkimos-Eglinton region which the WA State Government has mudmapped since 2008 for a northern hub.
