NRL star Mitch Barnett leases redundant Newcastle district home

NZ Warriors and ex-Knight forward Mitch Barnett, who copped one of the biggest suspensions of the NRL season, has leased his home just a year after buying it.

New Zealand Warriors-bound Mitch Barnett has leased the redundant Newcastle district home he and his wife Clare bought just over 12 months ago.

Barnett was released from the final year of his Newcastle Knights NRL contract to make the trip across the ditch.

The two-time Danny Buderus Medal winner (in 2017 and 2019) paid $1,045 million just after the 2021 season ended.

The couple recently secured a tenant for the four-bedroom, 2007-built home after asking $1,050 a week through Nathan Finney at Safe Hands Property Management powered by PRD Nationwide.

The marketing, which was up online for under a week, advised the pool would be fenced and tiled prior to the tenancy and that its lower floor study room was excluded in the lease.

The two storey brick home on 665sq m had previously sold for $755,000 in 2016. It has a pool out back.

Realestate.com.au calculates the Garden Suburb median for houses over the last year as $975,000, with rents typically set at $610 a week with an annual rental yield of 3.8 per cent.

The back rower has spent all but two games of his 128-game career at the Knights, having joined in 2016 after a rookie year in Canberra. He has signed for three years with the Warriors.

In March, Barnett was sent off and handed a six-game NRL suspension for an elbow to the jaw of Panthers second-rower Chris Smith.

Barnett told the judiciary, he felt “horrible” after he was sent off.

“Not only did I let my teammates down for the rest of the game ... I was worried for Chris,” Barnett said.

“I didn’t know how he was. I made a split-second decision at speed to try to stop a try.

“If I had my time again I wouldn’t raise my arm so high.”

Barnett shapes as a key player for the Warriors in 2023, after their struggles of recent seasons.

Garden Suburb’s other NRL players include his ex-teammate Dane Gagai, who bought for $821,000 in 2015.
