Winery meets warehouse at unique Mt Dandenong home
Equal parts industrial flair and vineyard vibes, there’s more than meets the eye at this Mt Dandenong home with floors reclaimed from Her Majesty’s Theatre inside and deer that visit the gardens.
Hidden away down a private lane, this warehouse and winery-inspired home brings a Collingwood edge to the Dandenong Ranges.
The cool interior at 119 Ridge Rd, Mt Dandenong is a homage to the warehouse home of a friend to vendor Jarrod La Canna.
But the idea for the facade came from the Chateau Yerring Hotel in the Yarra Valley.

“So it’s a really good house for parties,” Mr La Canna said.
It’s a unique combination, much like the rest of the two-storey home, which has been turning heads since 2002 with its unexpected details, starting with the solid timber front door powder-coated for a glasslike finish.
A step inside has you following in the footsteps of stage legends: the floorboards were reclaimed from Her Majesty’s Theatre during a renovation.
Exposed recycled bricks, put in place rough and uncleaned to line the interior walls and arched entries between rooms, join dark steel railings as the building blocks of the home’s industrial character. Two open fireplaces in the main living areas provide a cosy atmosphere.
The black-themed kitchen has an island bench and walk-in pantry that complement its aesthetic with functionality.
The lawns around the home feature hidden surprises too, with unexpected bulbs emerging every few years in a sign of the area’s past as a flower farm. “I have to be careful being too ruthless with the mower,” Mr La Canna said.
But it’s the 1.73ha property’s uninvited guests Mr La Canna will miss most: the echidnas, wombats and the occasional deer on the front lawn.
There’s even local history across the road, with Burke’s Lookout and the site of the Kyeema plane crash that claimed the life of Member of Parliament Charles Hawker and three prominent winemakers, as well as the crew, several barristers and a couple on their honeymoon in 1938.
Bell Real Estate’s Corinne Sukroo said the “amazing creation and much loved work of art” was among the coolest homes in the ranges.
