The Arrow Studio, Tylden: Sweet story behind slick country creation
It might look alien, but the creation of this slick structure next to a country house an hour outside Melbourne is beautifully human.
An intriguing architect-designed alien-like structure sitting starkly beside a charming country home an hour northwest of Melbourne is catering to buyers in the COVID age.
The metallic oddity at 21 Trentham Road was designed by Melbourne architects Peter Hogg and Toby Reed, “well known for their cutting edge and environmentally sustainable designs”, according to the vendor, and has featured in numerous architecture publications.
Despite looking out of this world, the slick studio was born out of a very sweet human story.
RT Edgar agent Matthew Bourke said it was commissioned by the late owner “to house his wife’s artwork after she passed away, in honour of her”.

The couple’s children are now selling the deceased estate, which also features a more traditional three-bedroom house on its 0.57ha, with price hopes of $560,000-$615,000.
“The Arrow Studio was conceived as an out of focus, reflective vortex in the Australian landscape,” an architect description of the space reads.
“At night the arrow projects light through the timber slats at each end and lights up the garden like a cinema projection booth in a field.”
They told Dezeen: “At night, the room acts as a giant lantern, illuminating the bush garden.”
Mr Bourke said interested parties had considered it for working from home, as an art studio or gallery — and even a teenager’s retreat — including those looking to escape the city.
“We’re getting lots of Melbourne buyers and lots of first-home buyers as well, it’s in that price bracket,” he said.
“We had 25 groups at the first open, which is pretty big numbers for up our way,”
Melbourne buyers had always been active in the local market, just beyond Mount Macedon, he said, but some were now looking with increased capacity to work from home and the desire to dodge COVID-age city life and any lockdowns that came with it.
