Ross Perrett: Golf course designer tees up sale of Brighton mansion

The man behind some of the world’s most spectacular golf courses — including 18 holes next to the pyramids of Giza and Australia’s only island course — has sold his impressive slice of Brighton.

Acclaimed golf course designer Ross Perrett has swung a sale for his impressive slice of Brighton.

Mr Perrett and his wife Helen sold their home of 25 years to a young Brighton family who loved the 1890-built mansion’s “original charm”, Nick Johnstone selling agent Joe Doyle said.

The price achieved by the six-bedroom house at 6 Manor St is undisclosed, but the property had most recently been quoted at $7.7-$8.4 million.

Mr Doyle said the buyers planned to update parts of the home while retaining its period flourishes, including eight marble-encased Victorian fireplaces, stained-glass windows, hardwood flooring and decorative ceilings.

“Everyone wants to live in Manor St because (it’s) walking distance to the beach and Church St,” he said.

“These types of properties don’t come up all the time.”

The 1419sq m property attracted buyer interest from as far as Scotland, China and Hong Kong, generating multiple offers, the agent said.

Mr Perrett recently teamed up with 41-time LPGA winner Karrie Webb to form design firm Perrett Webb, but is perhaps best known for his long-term partnership with late golfing legend Peter Thomson at Thomson Perrett.

His firm’s creations include championship course The Duke’s at Scotland’s prestigious St Andrews, a course on Indonesia’s most active volcano, 18 holes near the Great Pyramid of Giza, and a course billed as Australia’s only island golf course, the Hamilton Island Golf Club.

When his property first hit the market in August, the architect told the Herald Sun he’d loved coming home after travelling the world for work.

“I was going away 15 times a year. It was a really wonderful thing to come home,” he said.

“I’m an architect; I hope it sells to someone who appreciates it.”

He and his wife raised four children in the house, which had become too big for them after the kids moved out.

CoreLogic records indicate the Perretts paid $1.15 million for the property in 1995. They then updated parts of the house, notably installing new bathrooms and a kitchen featuring a vintage Aga gas-combustion stove and a walk-in pantry with access to a sub-floor cellar.
