Mornington Racecourse: House next to horseracing track for sale
A luxurious pad “closer to the action than any of the grandstands” is up for grabs in Mornington.
Racing fans have the opportunity to take the reins at a house that counts the Mornington Racecourse as its closest neighbour — no horsing around.
Nick and Sue Hassett are selling their family home at 167 Roberts Road with a $2.6-$2.7m price guide that includes a prime trackside position better than any Birdcage.
Mr Hassett said during the course’s 18 annual race meetings, his home’s elevated 95sq m back deck was “a lot closer to the action than any of the grandstands on the track”.

“You can see the whole track,” Mr Hassett said.
“The finish line is on the other side, but every race on the course flies past our deck.”
The Hassetts bought the 1.28ha block in 1998, when it was vacant, and built the two-level, five-bedroom residence over two years to 2007.
They raised their two daughters there and, for a period, shared the house with Mrs Hassett’s father, Australian Racing Hall of Fame jockey Ron Hutchinson.
“He rode his first Group 1 in 1945 (as a 17-year-old), and his crowning glory was riding for the Duke of Norfolk at the Ascot Gold Cup, (in front of) the Queen,” Mr Hassett said.
“He’s an absolute legend of the sport. He doesn’t want us to sell, but it’s time for another chapter.”
The couple is selling to downsize, but Mr Hassett intends to stay connected to the racecourse as the Mornington Racing Club Advisory Group’s chairman.
He said he’d miss hosting race-day parties at the property, which was “built for entertaining”, with the upstairs level “one open space” featuring living and dining areas, a kitchen, bar, and sliding doors opening to the deck.
The bedrooms, study and a two-car garage are concentrated downstairs, while the substantial block also contains a barn-style studio, an orchard and vegie patch, a chicken pen, a fire pit, a playground and a giant chess set.
Community Real Estate selling agent Stewart Lardner dubbed the home “an entertainer’s paradise and family haven all in one”.
“It’s like having your own private box at all race meetings, where you can entertain family and friends on the huge viewing deck and easily access the large bar just inside,” he said.
