Max May: celebrated architect’s impressive Kew design for sale
A huge swimming pool inside this Bauhaus-style home surrounded by inner Melbourne bushland — enjoyed through stretching walls of glass — is for sale, even luring its designer back through.
An award-winning architect has called a Kew residence up for sale one of his best works.
Max May attended an open for inspection at 9 Belvedere, which is on the market for $4.5-$4.8 million.
Marshall White Boroondara agent Hamish Tostevin said the working architect called the property “some of his best work ever” during the visit.

“It was built in 1988 for the current vendors by Max May … who said if he could he would buy it himself,” Mr Tostevin said.
“He’s still an architect in Collingwood and the property has attracted quite a bit of interest from people who appreciate his style.”
Mr May was widely celebrated for winning the Victorian Chapter Medal for House of the Year in 1974, for Rattle House in Harkaway.
The Bauhaus-style property includes a expansive indoor swimming pool surrounded by soaring panels of glass and a vaulted timber ceiling.
The pool looks out to the bushland, which surrounds the property near Studley Park.
Plenty of original charm remains intact, with a timber kitchen and another vaulted ceiling in the open-plan domain.
Living areas are elevated to the first floor, with a balcony that’s perfect to entertain from and soak in the sights.
Large bedrooms and a study offer peace and privacy in the cleverly designed three-storey home.
The property is for private sale for the first time in its 33-year history.
