Lyon House, Ballarat: Gothic house for sale after modern renovation
Bold light fittings, an “exclusive” kitchen and a pool inside converted stables star at historic home that’s been a popular Airbnb.
Gothic grandeur meets a modern edge at this elegantly restored Ballarat beauty.
Steeped in history, 1880s-built Lyon House is a luxurious retreat in the heart of the regional Victorian city that combines the design of a bygone era with present-day comforts.
The 15 Lyons Street North property, set on 505sq m of land, has just been listed for $1.775m-$1.875m.
Terrazzo tiles sit against an old, original wood fireplace, while modular bunk beds and funky light fittings catapult the heritage-listed home into the twenty-first century.

Owned by hoteliers David Cook-Doulton and Martin Shew, the two-storey property is now on the market for $1.775m-$1.875m after operating as an “high quality” Airbnb for many years.
The duo is moving on to its latest venture: a seven-star hotel on Ballarat’s main street.
McGrath Ballarat director Daniel Nestor said the “iconic” abode was among the best the area had to offer.
“It’s a real entertainer’s home, which is the way the current owners have designed it,” he said.
“They’ve gone with a lot of high-quality fittings.
“The style of the renovation is quite Gothic — there are a lot of dark tones throughout the home and the original staircase has been restored.”
Upstairs, three bedrooms and two ensuites provide a private escape from the open-plan living below, where a large kitchen and dining space with a 14-seater table are the property’s crowning jewels.
“The kitchen and the dining space are very different, very exclusive in the way they present,” Mr Nestor said.
“That’s where the money has been spent. It’s an extension that ties in the original features of the home.”
A third bathroom, a large pantry, storage and a greenhouse are also on the ground floor.
Meanwhile at the rear of the property, original stables have been refashioned into a pool and bar area.
Mr Nestor said the property was perfectly positioned at the helm of Ballarat’s renewed foodie scene, with lots of cafes and boutique eateries nearby. It was also close to Lake Wendouree.
