Chart-topping singer and composer Julia Stone is bidding a fond farewell to the “quiet oasis” where she converted a bedroom into a music studio.

Stone listed the two-bedroom apartment at 2/85 Westbury St, St Kilda East, one of eight inside an Art Deco building named The Birches, with a $880,000-$940,000 asking range.

In 2010, Stone and her brother Angus – who make up the Angus & Julia Stone folk and indie pop duo – released their second album, Down the Way, which debuted at number one on the Australian Recording Industry Association charts.

It won the ARIA Album of the Year award and their single Big Jet Plane received the Single of the Year gong, and was voted number one in radio station Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2011.

The next year, Stone’s second solo album hit number 11 and in 2017, the band’s fourth studio album shot to number two.

A fifth studio album, Cape Forestier, was released in May.

Stone said that after years of living out of a suitcase while touring overseas, she spent months searching for her dream home in St Kilda where she loved playing shows.

She described walking into the residence for the first time as “a magical moment”.

“I had my own entrance at the back of the building, as well as through a security door at the front,” Stone said.

“It felt like a quiet oasis amidst a bustling city.”

She purchased in 2014 and spent a year upgrading, including pulling up carpet in the second bedroom to use as her music studio.

“I opened up the walls to the veranda from the bedroom with French doors so I could wake up and walk outside in the morning light if I wanted,” the singer said.

“I added a beautiful pergola to sit under with hanging plants, I made a bench chair for the kitchen and installed huge kiosk windows to let in the gentle summer breeze.”

One of her best friends, “incredible carpenter” Brett Mason, built hardwood floating shelves throughout the house for her books.

The lounge room features an open fireplace, while the main bedroom has built-in wardrobes and an ensuite.

Other highlights include a concealed laundry, intercom entry, ducted heating and airconditioning.

Stone decided to sell the apartment after relocating to Tasmania last year.

“I’ll miss it so much, but I’m also happy for someone else to be inspired by the space,” she said.

“I hope someone makes as many incredible memories there as I did.”

Marshall White’s Matthew Grima said mostly couples and downsizers had inspected the home.

“It’s really rare to get a renovated ground floor period-style apartment with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and a car park,” Mr Grima said.

The apartment will be auctioned at 10.30am on October 12.
