A determined local buyer held off three other bidders to win the keys to a charming clinker brick home on a huge 1070sq m block in a hot Newtown pocket.
The Geelong man paid $935,000 for the two-bedroom house, built in 1960, at 11 Vista Rd on Saturday in front of a 50-strong crowd.
“He was pretty set on it,” said Buxton, Newtown agent Alistair Nash.

Buyers pounce on century-old Newtown house with potential
“They’ll rent it out initially with a view to develop further down the track.”
The final figure exceeded the price expectations of $800,000-$850,000.
“It sold well above reserve, and we had a number of genuine buyers in the running,” Mr Nash said.
“The result didn’t surprise me at all – it’s a solid, quality house on an enormous block in a gorgeous street surrounded by quality homes and within blue ribbon Newtown.”
The property last traded in December 2012 when it sold for $580,000.
Inside, the floorplan offers one bathroom, a large kitchen, and adjoining living and dining zone.
The prime location is within walking distance to the Barwon River and Pakington St.
Buxton, Newtown auctioneer Tom Butters said the rare property offered plenty of potential.
“You could go down every path – move straight in and make the most of the big backyard, renovate or extend, or remove the current house and build a dream family home,” he said.
“Blocks of land like this in Geelong, especially in Newtown, are as rare as hen’s teeth.”
Mr Nash said the sale was Buxton, Newtown’s fourth in the area (three in the same street and one in neighbouring Fairmont Rd) in the past eight months.
“Geelong’s really moving along at the moment, there’s a lot of real opportunity available,” he said.
Investors have also been drawn to the area, including former Geelong footballer Scott Selwood who purchased a nearby site in 2016 with the intention to develop.
