Ian Thorpe makes big splash with new landmark $3m pad
Olympic swimming champion Ian Thorpe has a stylish new home in a landmark 1960s Harry Seidler-designed complex. But it’s missing one crucial element.
Olympic swimming champion Ian Thorpe has moved around the corner, paying $2,790,000 for a stylish Edgecliff apartment in the landmark 1960s Harry Seidler-designed Arlington complex.
Spanning two levels, it showcases Seidler’s signature streamlined aesthetic while capitalising on its natural light and air flow.
No pool, though.
The upper level comprises open-plan living and dining with engineered timber floors, custom walnut and marble cabinetry and wall-to-wall windows with Harbour views. The lower level consists of three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The 164sqâm apartment last sold in 2016 for $2.37m.
Thorpe’s nearby Ocean St, Woollahra townhouse, which was passed in on a $3.95m vendor bid at its September auction, has since been leased after being offered at $1850 a week through Zsuzsi Anda of Selby Anda Real Estate. The sales listing had secured 4400 page views on realestate.com.au during its pre-auction marketing through Black Diamondz agents Courtney Wong and Monika Tu.
It is set in an 1860s mansion converted into six residences in 1983, to a design by the late architect Furio Valich. Thorpe bought it in 2017 for $2.75m from Muscle & Fitness Australia owners Paul Graham and wife Carole.
With 164sqâm of indoor and 52sqâm of outdoor living, the three-level townhouse came with communal heated pool set at the front of its grounds amid tropical gardens.
On listing, Thorpe advised that the spacious home had become surplus to his needs as he was “completely single” and looking for a smaller apartment nearby.
Thorpe, who is in the Nine broadcast team for the 2024 Paris Olympics, previously owned properties in the Sutherland Shire, Thirroul and the Hollywood Hills.
According to PropTrack, the median unit price in Edgecliff is $1.3m. That’s down 16.1 per cent over the past 12 months.
